Question: Can anyone tell me what NYC or NYS code requires in terms of insulation R-level in walls for new, multi-unit dwellings?

  1. It depends if you are doing a general tabulation with the state version or ashrae version. You can try to play with COMcheck which will make your life easier but it really depends on the type of exterior wall since the r rating is based on the u-value of the material.

  2. To comply with energy code, you need to complete energy calculation in Comchek (for new construction multi-family building). It will calculate the entire envelope and mechanical and lighting compliance. I don’t think there is a definite number for insulation R-value. R-value is one of the many variable numbers you need to fill in.
