Our small apartment building has an over-taxed boiler and uneven heat throughout the building. Rather than do this piecemeal, we were thinking about finding a (reasonable) consultant who could do an assessment of our whole system and recommend what to do. Has anyone worked with one they can recommend?

  1. Hi paveplage,

To see my online bio go to my website, http://www.thehvacguru.com or Google “the hvac guru” and all the top hits are me.

Anyway, your heating system is an extremely simple one, I assure you, so you will have limited options, but good ones. Making relevant recommendations to remedy your “over taxed boiler” and “uneven heating” could be competently accomplished with just a few answers to pointed questions and a few digital photos or, better still, a YouTube video of your system.

If you are interested, I will give you a free consultation as to what your system needs. No, I will not come to NYC to fix it, though, unless you want to pay me big time.

I started as a service technician after Tech school 30 years ago. I’ve been self-employed as a contractor of all things HVACR consistently since 1988, but acted as a Sales Engineer for larger HVACR companies for a couple of years. I’m a service tech, system designer and installer, licensed for gas and oil, A/C and Refrigeration, have invented over a hundred designs for the trade with a half dozen industry standards that virtually everyone involved in forced hot water buy in the millions each year (see my site), am a professional HVACR consultant and Expert Witness in Civil cases. I have 3 websites on HVACR and a 4th weeks away from going live and am launching a host of killer Sales Engineering Apps for free on the new site. I’ve designed HVAC cost estimating systems and can do a $100K estimate in a mere half hour with my new system, that will be free on my site. I do a lot of work in historic museums around New England, which you can see on my site.

Among some of my customers are, the developer of the cable modem,(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouzbeh_Yassini) a lead actress in La Dolci Vita, Frnace’s “Leading Lady”, (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0299014/), the 2nd most influential architect in America of the 20th century, (http://www.historicnewengland.org/historic-properties/homes/Gropius%20House/gropius-house), the author of Pumping Iron, Arnold Schwarzenneger’s 1st film, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Gaines), well, see my bio on my site for more on my cred.

Anyway, not trying to boast, but I’ve learned long ago in this business that one has to sell oneself (tastefully) in order to stand out. I’m not the only good guy out there, but I can guarantee there are more bad ones than good ones in this business. I don’t know anyone on this forum, so that is not a comment on any of them – they may all be excellent for all I know.

Basically, your system is a cakewalk. I could walk you through the whole thing over the phone in an hour and you would know exactly what you will need when we’re done.

Contact me through my site if you are interested.

    Thanks,
    John

  2. Yup, call Master Plvmber(Gateway) for consulting and then hire them to do the work. They installed my new boiler a few months back and we couldn’t be happier with their work, professionalism and how nicely our house heats up now. The first in the 20 yrs we’ve been there that we have even heat in the house.

  3. MP, I just realized how my post could have been misinterpreted. My apologies. What was intended is that as a consultant I will not try to also be the installer. Indeed we may direct the client to a suitable installer who can provide professional service that will make my job as a consultant easier. Such as Gateway Plumbing & Heating

    Gateway Plumbing

    among others…

    Respect rasta!

  4. Ugh. No matter how many times I proofread a post, it’s not until after I hit send that I see the mistakes.

Meant to say: “I’ve been doing one or two full-building Heating System Evaluations *per week in the winter* for the past several years.

  5. A comprehensive building overview is the only way to go with a steam system…the comparison that I always use is to think of the heating system as a balloon…when you change one part of it, it changes everything else in the system. I offer a free heating consultation, supplying a laundry list of recommendations that you can hire me to do, or a plumber/ heating tech of your own choosing. If you select me to do the work, everything is guaranteed for a year. You can email me at errol832000@yahoo.com By the way, I would also recommend Gateway as another option..John is a really nice, knowledgeable guy, and they have equipment that I can only dream about, e.g. a $3000 dollar thermal imaging camera

  6. I’ve been doing one or two full-building Heating System Evaluations for the past several years…for a fee.
If you use my company to make any recommended or necessary upgrades either to satisfy the current Codes, improve efficiency, ensure proper function or maximize equipment lifespan, I give you half your fee back towards the work performed.

This way, you get a fair and honest assessment that you already paid for. I don’t need to sell you anything more and you’re free to take my suggestions, if any, and shop for other prices on the work if you prefer.

The evaluation consists of about an hour-long site visit with thermal imaging and combustion analysis tools, then a comprehensive written report is emailed to you with options and costs, if necessary.
