Hello Brooklynites–Any suggestions for good fabric places either in BK or in the fashion district? I need to pick out fabric for some custom furniture pieces. Thanks!

  1. I also recommend Harry Zarin on the Lower East Side (Grand St). There is a huge selection.

  2. Last time I checked at ABC, the Silk Trading Co. with all those gorgeous fabrics was gone, replaced by a Conrad’s outpost. So don’t waste a trip going there. Zarin’s is good, and the place on the SE corner of Delancey and Orchard, entrance on Orchard, is Joe’s that another person posted about above. On the second floor, as mentioned. It is VERY crowded and has a lot less to choose from, but it’s so close to Zarin’s that it might be worth a look. They can also order from sample books. Stark Carpet usually has a big warehouse sale in the city in March and they have some very nice fabrics there at heavily discounted prices. Check the Stark Carpet website for updates on the sale. There is also Beckenstein’s in Chelsea, with a few discounted fabrics on the lower level.
I even had good luck purchasing mohair velvet on ebay.

  3. Oh yes, how could I forget Silk Trading Co at ABC!!! Got some absolutely gorgeous fabric there to cover dining chair seats a number of years back. They were doing some kind of swapping out old stock for new when I was doing my marathon tour of fabric stores back in 2009 – place was disappointingly half-empty. Worked to my benefit, as it made me find Zarin, which also has beautiful fabric, though not as high end, so more affordable when buying yards (though affordable is a relative term when discussing both places – buying at both felt like a splurge for quality, gorgeous fabric.)

  4. I second the recommendation for ABC basement. Great choices. Not cheap, but the stuff is gorgeous. Hopefully, you’re making it to last for 25 years so it will amortize…

  5. If money is no object, ABC carpet – the furniture store building in the basement – has a huge amount of spectacular upholstery fabric with prices to match. It’s nicely displayed and easy to view.

  6. I needed upholstery fabric just over a year ago for two projects. Since I hadn’t bought this sort of fabric before, I googled up 7 or 8 stores. First, I went to Zarin, where I saw a lot of nice fabric. Then, because I wasn’t sure what I wanted, and I like to look, I went to all the others. Went back to Zarin for both purchases. Their stuff is nicely discounted- you can see the same fabrics online at the higher retail price.

For upholstery fabric, the only other place I would even advise you to look is a place near Zarin, name escaping me at the moment – from Zarin, go one street east, one block north, on SE corner of the main ave there – on 2nd floor, entrance on the side street that runs north-south. All the others had a disappointingly small selection of upholstery fabric. Good for other sewing projects, but save yourself the running around I did. Zarin is it; if not, place nearby worth a look, though Zarin has a much larger selection.
