I’ve never had to completely rewire a house and we hired an electrician, who is a friend of a friend. He leaves our house in a complete mess every time he is here, including his chinese take out boxes, empty water bottles, debris and the kicker was when our original tin ceiling came down while we were at work and didn’t even bother to tell us. The latter aside, is it normal and should we expect him to clean up after himself? He says he will but would charge us an extra$100/day.

Thoughts?

  1. When I worked in the field if my boss got a call from a customer with what your going through, I would’ve been fired. I was a plumber(now in sales) and I remember once doig a customers dishes for them because they were in a hurry to get to work. I was installing a new insinkerator for them. I told them to go, I’d take care of it. Needless to say, I got a nice tip from them too and was always requested to do the work when they needed us. Being courteous and cleaning up after ourselves on top of doing quality work is all part of the job. I sent an apprentice home once because he had too many rips in his jeans. He didn’t look professional and represented the company. He didn’t last too long.

  2. Seriously, get rid of the person. No competent PROFESSIONAL tradesman leaves his workspace a mess at the end of the day.

    Trim the low hanging fruit.

  3. If he doesn’t clean where you CAN see things, just imagine the quality of his work where you CAN’T see it. Get rid of him now. Too bad about the ripple effect with your friend and his friend.

  4. Master Plumber – he is in fact licensed.

He is full of excuses but my favorite was he was unable to clean up because he could not find garbage bags even though he took one from a big box of contractor bags and laid it out on the kitchen counter to protect it from being scratched.

  5. An extra $100/day to clean up after himself.

    Obviously not licensed and/or moonlighting.

You don’t get what you don’t pay for, friends.

  6. Before anyone is hired for any work in my house I INSIST they leave it broom clean. I explain im not their mother and they are not going to leave my house in a mess. If they cant live with that then i cant live with their work. SOunds like you hired a slouch for an electritian. I use Mike Adanuncio , Hes never left me a mess

  7. Ah, the joys of working without a general contractor. The electrican’s are usually hired by the GC and they make sure they clean up there part of the work or at least take care it all. If you don’t have it in your contract, good luck.
