I am the owner of a house on a street that is quite literally covered in dog feces. It appears that NO ONE cleans up after their dog, leaving it to me – a non-dog owner – to clean up huge piles of mess on an almost every day basis. I am at my wit’s end. I called 311 several times to file complaints and asked for the Pooper Scooper signs to post, only to be told they no longer give them out. I love pets and take care to buy salt for my sidewalks that is safe for animals but this is simply disgusting and I don’t know how to fix this problem. Any advice brownstoners?

  1. Late to the conversation on this. Not picking it up is bad enough — but what I don’t understand is whatever happened to ‘curb your dog’?

I’d love to start a good neighbor campaign that lets dog-owners know that pedestrians really don’t like walking through pee-puddles and poop-residue that are smack-dab in the middle of the sidewalk!

And on top of taking pets curbside, it would be great if dog-owners carried a water bottle along with their plastic bags — to douse pee with water to dilute it so that the smell of pee doesn’t overwhelm neighbors, especially in the summer when it hasn’t rained in awhile….

  2. I confronted a few ways– when my child was little I said ‘maybe you can tell me how to answer him when he asks why (they) don’t clean up after their dog.How do I answer my 6 year old’ ? Guilt: That worked for awhile.
Then, I asked if that was how their mother’s raised them, to leave their sh*t all over the house– after all this is Brooklyn and we all have to live here too… Ditto- awhile,

Now, I go to where these landmines are and put black pepper, fox urine, or crushed red pepper on them. A few sneezes later, and they are *poof* gone. (fox urine can be found in hunting stores, powder or liquid. Really stinks, and with any/above must be reapplied after a rain)

The rat poision seems a bit much, even though getting dumped ‘on is annoying.

(I did once follow someone home, from a safe distance, and left description of owner and dog on baggie, with ‘return to sender’ on it… Too much effort and risk to repeat.)

(ok doghouse, maybe feral cats and kids/adults, yeah maybe; but more likely dogs.)

  3. I live on State Street and find many anti-dog people live there…perhaps “statestreeter” is one of them. I ALWAYS pick up after my very tiny dogs and kind of resent people on my street yelling at me because of those who do not (mostly they accuse my pups of making messes bigger than they are even as I carry my tiny poops in a bag). It’s so bad that they yell at me if we walk past their houses and insist that they need to walk on the other side of the street. Everybody needs to chill…a lot.

And…by the way…I HAVE seen people poop on the street. Just FYI.

  4. And if you do decide to keep doing any cleaning up (which, good grief, you REALLY should NOT have to do! I’m another dog owner/lover who gets SO pissed off when people don’t clean up after their pooches…), don’t use ammonia (which the first poster mentioned). There’s something about it that reminds dogs of pee smell and actually encourages them to reuse a spot. Just FYI.

Good luck! I’ve also noticed it’s been really bad because of all the snow this winter, but that is so not an excuse.

  5. Find out where they live, and dump it in front of their home with a note explaining why your dumping dog turds on their property.

  6. Write directly to the Commissioner of Sanitation instead of calling 311. His office is actually very conscientious. If you give them the exact location, they will send inspectors over the course of a week to find the scofflaws. I have had some success with this. The office will also let you know the outcome of the surveillance.

It’s just totally disgusting. For some reason, when it snows, people think that they don’t have to pick up after their dogs.

  7. One day I was driving along and saw a young couple with their dog. The dog stopped to poop, and the couple just watched, then decided to start walking away.

I slammed on the breaks, confronted them telling them how disgusting and inappropriate it was, and they just had this sheepish look but did nothing.

    Unbelievable.
