I was just reading the Brownstoner forum discussion about shopping and amenities (or lack of) in Bed-Stuy from 2009 and wanted to kind of re-open that discussion. Fulton Street is basically all of the regular shopping for the neighborhood, besides some specialty shops along Tompkins, Lewis, and Stuyvesant (and no, I don’t really consider spending $14 after tax and tip for lunch a place I patron regularly). I wanted to see what people would like to have added to the area, especially along Fulton where it makes the most sense for businesses to locate, and see how that has changed from that 2009 forum discussion at all. Any thoughts?
I know I just spent an hour and a half trying to find fresh veggies last night walking home from the Kingston/Throop stop at 8pm. Bodega guys laughing every time I asked. I finally found some frozen brocolli at a newish bodega on Halsey and Throop. I like Foodtown and I like Tony’s Natural Foods, but what else is there? And stuff is not exactly close to south-east Bed-Stuy or open in the evening?

  1. rh You won’t beat bagel hole. Best in the entire city. I won’t eat La Bagel’s giant rolls with holes. Bergen is better but not even close to bagel hole.

  3. I second the bagel store, but only real bagels, please. I wouldn’t go to Bergen or La Bagel if it was outside my door. It’s sad that I still have to return to Bagel Hole in my old neighborhood when I want a real bagel.

At least we have real croissants and baguette at La Table on Tompkins! 🙂

  4. There is a great green market on the corner of Ralph and Broadway and a surprisingly good Associated at the intersection too with a reasonable produce section. There is also when the weather improves there is a farmer’s market every Wednesday Gates Ave J stop on Broadway. All of that might be a bit far for you if you are up by Fulton.

What ever happened to the butternut market place that was supposed to open any minute now for the last two years?

The neighborhood really could use a decent market, particularly one that carries good (organic/free range) meats and some solid prepared food. Maybe the Tin City guy would start carrying more produce if people asked him. He just started serving stews and they are great.

  5. I’ll admit to going to Fairway for my big shopping once a week, but…

If you’re as far west as Tony’s, check out the Korean grocery across the street. No, it’s not a fancy grocery with organic broccoli rabe, but their vegetable selection isn’t bad.

I’m going to be quite satisfied with the wine shops as soon as the place on Nostrand opens (closer), but for now Olivino is great!

My wish list includes a health food or healthy grocery that sells prepared meals, a pet food store and more restaurants (that also deliver).

  6. Although you specify Bed Stuy, I’d like to add Clinton Hill since we’re so close and this is a subject I’ve commented on many times. First and foremost fresh fruit and veggies. I’ve emailed Tish James and she’s told me that the Met Food on Fulton bet Cambridge and St James has upgraded their produce department. It’s still not satisfactory and it’s expensive. Some fresh bread/bagels, i.e., Bagel Delight would be nice or another Bergen Bagel. It seems when new stores open in this area, they go up to Myrtle and don’t really consider Fulton. However, this area of Fulton near Cambridge has recently gotten some new restaurants and bars. Not something I’m interested in. Just saying…
