Any strong opinions on wired vs. wireless alarm systems? All signs point to wireless – substantially less expensive installation ($5000 vs. $300), similar maintenance costs ($30 vs $45 per month), similar level of effectiveness. We have heard concerns that wireless will not work well in a four floor brownstone with plaster walls – any evidence from users?

  1. slopegirl, do you mean she’s had the same wireless system for 20 years? Seems like there might have been some technology updates over that period. My parents have a wired system and they have been plagued with false alarms and other issues as well. Their experience has made me not want a wired system so I’ve been hoping that there might be a better alternative.

  2. my mom has had a wireless system for about 20 years in her 4 story brownstone. If you can stomach it AT ALL, go for wired.

There are constant problems with false alarms and units going bad. It just doesn’t work that well. It does work, and it’s not terrible, but it’s a pain.

  3. Take it from a professional who isn’t trying to sell you something: Avoid wireless if at all possible. RF signals are funny things and can be impacted by things you would never expect. Ever drop a cell phone call in a place where you had 5 bars yesterday? Now imagine a transmitter with 1/100th of the power of your cell phone. Hardwired systems have no real monthly maintenance expense. Also keep in mind that if you upgrade your alarm system down the road, all of your hardwired devices will be compatible with the new one, the wireless transmitters may not be. Also see this thread:
