Hate my PTACs, suggest a replacement?

The condo I live in is heated and cooled with PTAC units in every room. They’re made by Suburban. I can’t stand them! They are extremely loud, they don’t distribute heat evenly around the rooms, in addition to noisy fans, they make loud clicking noises everytime they turn on when the temperature drops, poor installation allows for cold air to penetrate the rooms, we have to clean the filter every few days just to make sure we don’t get an error message on the display… in short, they suck! These are gas fired. I’d like to replace them with a quieter, better unit. Can someone recommend a PTAC that they’ve been happy with? I’m told units with electric heating elements are quieter but more costly to run than natural gas models. At this point, we’re open to anything.
Does anybody know if a cover would muffle the sound? would it be dangerous given it is gas?
I also moved into a condo with Suburban PTAC units. Very loud. 2 gas, 2 electric. So far, I have only used them for heating.
Most of the noise seems to come from the fan, not any internal motor or vibration, I’d just like to be able to set the fan speed slower.
Several posts talk about how loud Suburban units are, I have to think there are alternatives, but apparently only Islander makes gas PTACs.
A contractor said he could build a cover for $800 that would cut the noise by 20%, but I am not sure I believe it.
Anyone have any advice?
Does everyone else in the building have the same complaints about noise, or only you? If only you, maybe the blower bearings are going bad and a repair could be made.
Dude, it’s too loud. Trust me. The Suburban units sound like a freakin’ jet engine everytime the turn on and I have to double the volume of the TV. Conversations can’t be heard because of the volume of the unit’s fan. It’s ridiculous.
Gas. Quiet is quite relative and objective…

I’ll check it out but in the meantime, is it gas or electric? Quiet?
McQuay makes a great unit. President of the company is a fraternity brother of mine. So big up to McQuay!
I HATED the Ptacs in a condo we rented, I think it was a “Surburban” so I understand your pain.
The condo we just bought has an older model “McQuay” which I have to admit is pretty awesome. It’s not digital – so you don’t know the exact temp to set it at – but it’s a turn dial and you just lower it or raise it -my bills have not been anywhere as bad as when I lived in the condo with the other Ptac
Good Luck
