Hi. We have a few thin wood floorboards in our hallway that need replacing. It is a high traffic area and we can no longer ignore the problem. The whole hallway is probably 120 sq. feet. Any recommendations on who can do this would be helpful. Thanks.

  1. When you say thin floor boards, do you mean their thickness is slim or are you referring to their width(2 1/4″)?

Wood flooring that normally you look at is a finish flooring surface, that depends on a subfloor for the strength to bridge the gap between joists (16-23″)

If you have a solid subfloor that is strong enoough to support a finish surface, you will need to choose and have installed that finish surface.

If the existing floor has failed because it either lacks or is itself an inadequate subfloor, than you need to have the existing flooring removed, and tongue and groove plywood 3/4″ glued and screwed to the joists. Depending on the degree of level, or at least flatness?? of the joists, the subfloor must be shimmed or sistered level.

With a strong subfloor, you can choose your finish surface, hardwood flooring (best), machined wood, or possibly tile.

  2. Are you replacing the boards for safety or cosmetic reasons? If it’s safety, then by all means don’t wait and contact a local carpenter in your area. But if it’s just because the boards don’t look so nice anymore – no need to spend all that money. If it was me I’d probably just cover them up with a hallway area rug runner. Might want to take a look at http://www.arearugs.com to see what I’m talking about. Would probably look ok. So hope that helps a bit!
