Open WiFi?
I live on PPW and lately I’ve noticed a bunch of new open wifi networks named: Groupon NYC_PublicWiFi Area51 Google Anybody know what’s up with these open networks? John

Some of the newer wireless routers like the Cisco/Linksys E3000 have a feature called “guest access” turned on by default. These are essentially open wireless connections that don’t allow access to the LAN, just the internet.
vinca probably described “man in the middle” type of attack. I doubt it would be any effective since you will use HTTPS/SSL for any sensitive transmissions like communication with a bank. On other side if you will use open connection to download copyrighted movies the owner of open network can get in trouble with recording industry since his IP address will show up.
Many “free” networks are wolves in sheep’s clothing. Often they’re come-ons for direct, and malicious, connections to someone else’s computer. You can read more here: http://n.pr/hh3uzE
