I’m trying to figure out why, and decide if I should be worried, about a mysterious big wet spot on the sidewalk in front of my house. It’s been there for about 4 days. It’s about 10 feet long and 3 feet wide. No puddle, just wet concrete. None of the other houses on the block, at least within sight, have this. There is also some cracking going on around the wet spot. There is no flooding or wetness in my basement or in the basement stairs, which are only about 2 feet away. Any theories?

  1. I dropped a bottle of olive oil on my stoop and it left a spot that looked just like that, and it didn’t go away for several months. Does it feel oily?

  2. Are you sure it’s not sidewalk art? It looks a bit like an aerial view of Manhattan.

  3. You may win the kewpie doll! Yes, I did use ice melter a couple of nights ago when there were flurries, and then probably exacerbated the situation by putting more on because it looked wet and might ice up! Hope that’s it….

    Thanks.

  4. did you use some ice melter here? some time it melts the snow but if there is too much chemical it ends up looking wet for awhile till water dilutes it. (my guess – I’m no chemist.
