This isn’t my skylight but it’s similar. Today’s post Xmas sideways storm has forced snow into cracks in my skylight and caused an ice formation that has started to drip into onto the protective glass and run into my stairwell.

While i’m not about to go out there tonight, i’m hoping for a quick end to the storm and homing someone can actually mend these cracks – anyone know who might be able to attend to this? Does silicone actually work in below freezing weather? Thanks and happy holidays….

  1. I had exactly the same problem! First time, too.

However, I don’t think it’s the leading. I think it was the wind blowing snow into the vent on top. I noticed that the snow pile-up was in the middle of my stained glass panel — directly under the vent (the box on top).

  2. In really heavy wind-driven snow some gets in through the skylight vents and melts on the inner glass. You really shouldn’t seal those vents, to avoid condensation. The dripping is pretty rare. I’ve owned my house since 1974 and have only had it happen a handful of times, in real blizzards. Oddly, we only had a few drops last night. I live on the north side of my street; neighbors on the south side had much more dripping this time; it depends on wind direction.

Just mop up the water, which will stop dripping once all the blown in snow melts. Don’t worry too much about it, it’s inevitable and has happened in most of our houses once or twice every 10 years for the last century or more.
