I just realized that the ceiling of my mom’s big apartment was done with primer. Thinking of redoing it with ceiling paint but not sure it is worth the time and expense. It does not look bad but I think the ceiling paint would be brighter and open the apartment up perhaps.

  1. No no no!!!!!!! Please use ceiling paint. Primer is basically meant to either cover existing paint and/or provide a base coat surface for the actual paint you want to use to stick to. In other words, think of primer like glue. It’s flat, dull, dries very powdery/chalky, doesn’t cover well and will never give you an even surface. Ceiling paint is slightly pigmented (it’s actually pale grey) and will give you even coverage.

  2. ceiling paint will be saturated with pigment, primer is not.

painting will make it look more finished/polished and pretty, probably brighter too since the pigmented paint will reflect light better.

  3. The kitchen and back parlor were the only rooms repainted by our landlord’s contractor before we moved in. After a few months, I realized it was primer. It took on a dull dirty look. I repainted it myself with my landlord’s permission. much, much, much better.
