We’re thinking about buying a house that we think has engineered wood floors installed in the living, dining rooms and hallways. They are a very dated looking pickled white and in some places cherry, with a very thick varnish. If we get the place, I would like to refinish the floors and do a darker color.
The thing is that we can’t really tell if they are in fact engineered wood. The boards are short lengths and have beveled edges, but from the photo attached, you can’t see the layers of wood that make them look like they are engineered.
My questions: from this photo, do these look like engineered floors? If so, does anyone have any experience refinishing these types of floors? I’ve read that you can refinish them once but that you have to be very careful. Thanks for any help.

Looks like Maple pre-finished flooring. The upside is that you can sand and finish these floor again and again. The downside is that Maple doesn’t take a stain as well as the Oak’s.
If you are planning on doing this project DIY – make sure you test plenty of stains brands. Use a wood conditioner after sanding will help with high and low areas that Maple flooring is know for – then like I said before do plenty of testing until you have the desired results.

Unless I am mistaken I think you can see that it’s engineered wood by spotting the repeating ‘woodgrain’ patterns in the boards as they only use a limited number of variations.
looks like bruce prefinished hardwood flooring…lowend but not as bad as the engineered crap
Engineered floors are only about 3/8″ thick or so. These look to be 3/4″. They are probably factory prefinished, given the bevel edge and then may have been recoated. As long as you can ascertain that the oak(?) is solid all the way through, they can be refinished.
