I am wondering if anyone has used an architect/contacter that they would recommend. I am looking to renovate an owners duplex in a three family home. I need to move walls, update and move a kitchen and three bathrooms, new plumbling, electrical, new flooring, an extension on both floors into the the yard, a deck, facade work and roofing. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. For an electrician, I would say contact Christopher Jon Electrical(718-389-9898). I just renovated my home and they worked with my architect and contractor to bring all my outlets and switches up to code. They confirmed all specifications with the architect for the kitchen appliances and kept everyone in the loop which was needed because it was quite a long process.
I hear they do a good amount of work in the neighborhood.

  2. For an architect, I would recommend contacting Thomas Barry from http://www.opera-studio.com. He recently did 2 townhouse projects. One was a gut reno in Chelsea with a 12 ft extension to the garden. The other one in Brooklyn: also full reno of the owners duplex with a new rear facade opening to the garden. I know that he has a couple of good contractors that he typically works with.

  3. I have made this same recommendation in other postings. James at raadstudio.com. For full disclosure – we work with them on maybe 5% of their projects.

They do great work and can work with all budgets.

  4. I happily recommend my architect, David Cunningham, who designed and is overseeing the renovation of my 4-story brownstone, including owner’s duplex and two rental units (three kitchens, four bathrooms), plus 1-story addition, solar panels, new heating, plumbing, wiring, air conditioning. Job also included expeditor, structural engineer, and HVAC engineer. You can reach him at: T: 718 208 0815 E: david@dcapny.com. If you want to discuss this more, you can contact me at housereno at earthlink dot net.

  5. My Brownstoner clients have led me to a handful of architect/expediters this past year. All of the clients are multifamily owners, and some of the architects on my list are fairly savvy about multifamily code and can get DOB plans approved quickly.

If you want refs, please email so I can describe their work styles. I can also put you in touch with clients so they can describe their experiences with these professionals.
