We are moving and have some really great pieces of furniture and lighting that we will not be able to use in our new apartment. (dressers, stackable bookcases, brass chandelier etc) We have collected these over the last 25 years and do not just want to call an “estate buyer”. Any ideas where to call or post?

  1. Depends on how much you want to sell them for. If fairly inexpensive (for antiques), I’ve found craigslist to work well for well-priced stuff I was selling.

I haven’t sold any of my more expensive stuff, so I don’t know how it works for that.

You can always try craigslist, and move on to Plan B if that doesn’t work, or for whatever doesn’t sell.

  2. Thanks for the comments….photos of some of the items will be posted soon.

  3. Lets see some pictures. or call me 917-541-8044. I could use a couple pieces if the price is rite.

  4. An honest antique dealer will give you about half retail, which is fair. I used to have some contacts [with dealers in Queens, near where I used to work] and was pleasantly surprised by the offer we got several years ago when we cleared out a relative’s apartment, but unfortunately they’re outdated now. Perhaps someone here can give you a current referral.

You’d have to decide of it’s worth the extra effort to sell stuff on your own, but listing it here won’t hurt.

  5. There is a large spread between buy and sell with dealers. my instinct is you could sell it here and get a marginally better price. theres a brownstoner marketplace for this purpose. it will also depend on what they are and the prices you are seeking.

  6. What style??? Victorian could be sold to the places on Atlantic. Early American???

  7. Depends on how much work you want to put into it. The first step is going to be good pictures. I’d also have a clear idea of price, I for one hate “best offer” postings and don’t bother to respond. Craigslist is the obvious answer, but be advised it’s full of scammers these days. Don’t respond to responses that simply ask “Is it still available”, those are just people fishing for email addresses (although what they do with those addresses is beyond me, not sure I see the point). Ebay is great for smaller items, but furniture tends to not do as well, the shipping hassles just aren’t worth it. I think this is probably a pretty good forum, but I’d put up an email address so that people can contact you. I’m just speaking from personal experience. I’d be interested, but am hesitant to put my personal email up here for everyone to see. You might want to set up an email account just for something like this and then you just get rid of it when you’ve sold the stuff. Good luck with the move.
