Removing UGLY Facade
Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for what it would take to remove this facade and make the brick underneath look presentable? I realize it depends on the condition of the underlying brickwork so a range of figures would be helpful. Has anyone done a similar job and have pointers on things to consider?…

This is a house that we’re thinking of making an offer on, but that ugliness could be a dealbreaker!
astringer: learn to spell to illiterate numbskull.
I’m with 1910: a good cleaning, remove the window bars, a nicer door, and a new cornice
will do wonders (not to mention a few pretty plants!)! Good luck!
“That sort of thing doesn’t happen where I live.”
Of course not! The owner might be packin heat.
Leave the facade as is. Replace the Door and window detail to match the buildings on either side. Real stone or cement depending on budget. Remove awning. Replace the whole front door and framing. Better railing. Paint the whole place a dark greyish blue or bone white with a slightly darker sand color for door and window detail. New windows brick to brick. Can have a cornice built as budget allows. I’m for removing the bars unless the house is in a “good neighborhood”. The robbers go to those neighborhoods for the “good loot” on the inside.
Better question is how is the condition on the inside? outside is usually the easy part.
haha, i thought astringer @ 10.21 was spot on! a lot of people here have a lot of experience restoring and renovating towm homes, duh, so its a godd place for general advice. Minard did sound like a prick. And I do shamelessly shill for my nabe on HOTD threads, which has no real benefit.

Stonergut, what’s the “good” hood you live in and was any of those 10 times recent events?
Mmmmm. Bars. Ishtar, I have been burglarized 10 times (or more. It’s been so many times I can’t count), in a purportedly “good” neighborhood. While several of these were due to a tenant leaving the front door unlocked because they were too lazy to go back upstairs to get their keys, once I came home to discover someone had attempted to use a car jack to force the front bars open.
Inasmuch as I have a vote (well, I don’t really), I’d say leave bars on. As a neighbor who lived thru the Robert Moses days in Brooklyn, “This neighborhood can change really fast.”
I bow to CGmodern’s better knowledge about the placement of the facade on that particular house. Best wishes on a tough decision, OP.
