Is it possible to move the drop-ladder in this situation from the front of the platform to dropping off the left side of the platform? I understand it would involve opening up the left railing and closing off the front railing, but we’re doing some fire escape repairs so we were curious.

And yes, it is purely for aesthetic reasons- it blocks a beautiful view out the kitchen window. I realize this may seem silly, but a good view is priceless and it would really change the feel of the kitchen to look out on a nice yard instead of through bars.

Thoughts or advice appreciated.

  1. an ironworks place that makes fire escapes can do it.
I wouldn’t worry about permits or permissions as long as up to fire regs.

  2. Yes, you can. On the end is actually the preferred method as per the NYC Multiple Dwelling Law, which is what the DOB is enforcing when it comes to fire escapes.

As for actually doing the work, I’d speak to an expediter to see if that’s something you can do as a repair, or if it needs to be filed with the DOB. That is of course if you’re concerned with DOB filing regulations.
