Hi,

Can anyone recommend a great handyman (someone who can do carpentry, windows, floors, etc, etc) who will work for a day wage? I don’t like paying by the job and would prefer to give someone a day wage. My experience is that this saves me money and let’s me see how well someone works without committing to a long term relationship right away.

  1. I’d like to recommend Brian Piersol (piersol33@gmail.com) who I used for a few recent projects around my apartment. Very professional and quite a nice guy. Responds to email very quickly and can provide quotes. Seems very knowledgeable on a variety of things — I think he must have been a contractor at some point. There are a few recs for him around the forum which is where I found him originally.

  2. Given the investment in tools and work vehicle and insurance costs, $250 per man per
day is the industry standard for heavy construction in a house renovation. But the
lighter scale and scope of fastening shelves and repairing damaged ceilings ect. allows
for a lower daily rate based on a $25hr for carpentry and $35/hr for elec. and plumbing.
My rates are pegged to the scope of the job and the client’s needs. Contact me at
    646- 831 6481 or at piersol33@gmail.com. Brian

  4. Hi my name is Rob, I am in the directory and have an A+ rating on BBB. I can be reached at 516 987-3812.

  5. Stephen Kitts works by the hour, and is great. Also licensed, bonded, and insured, for those who need that. I seem to recall he used to offer a day rate, but I don’t see that on his site now – you could always ask.

  6. Maybe you can give kevin a call, he is more than a handy man but i am sure he would be willing to work with you, he is that type of guy. His number is 347 961 5544.

  7. The problem I find is it starts off great and then after a few days they slack off and waste time to draw out the project. If you are not on site all the time, you might as well give them your checkbook.

  8. P.S. In addition to the dummy handyman and the pricing ridiculousness, Today’s Maid cleaning was awful. A joke. They always left dust, they whined when you asked them to dust things like moldings and baseboards, they wouldn’t move anything sitting on the floor to clean behind it. The cleaning woman would sit and eat lunch. On my time. Look at Yelp Brooklyn for Today’s Home or Today’s Maid and you’ll see the slew of one-star reviews.

  9. I tried the Today’s Maid handyman service and the guy was utterly clueless. I had to pay by the hour with a minimum of hours and the guy only did a portion of what I needed done during that time because he was slow and had troubles and one task he just put holes in the wall then threw up his hands saying he didn’t know how to complete the task. It was to hang some wall shelves. Any handyman truly smart and talented doesn’t need to sign up with a service like that to get work.

For a while I was happy with their cleaning service too but then they started giving us the shaft. They had given us a flat rate to clean our house which once taxes were paid was PLENTY (something like $160) but then they started telling their cleaners to limit their time to under 4 hours. That’s to clean a whole house. And it came to $40 per hour! No cleaning person charges that, nobody. I now pay an independent cleaning woman $20 per hour, no taxes or extra tips etc, for 5 hours cleaning and she does ten times better than the Today’s Maid cleaners. Their business model simply doesn’t work if that’s what they have to do to make a profit. Seems their service might be fine for cleaning studio apts, but certainly not brownstones.
