Between 7th and 8th Ave on Lincoln Pl., across the street from 209 Lincoln is a tree that had a large branch torn off in the big tornado- storm last month. While there’s an “indent” in the trunk from where the branch snapped off, the tree’s main trunk seems quite solid; it still has leaves on it.

WHY DOES THIS TREE HAVE A SIGN ON IT THAT IT WILL BE TAKEN DOWN. THIS IS VERY SAD AND DISTURBING.

  1. I did hear from a BBG arborist that we will likely lose a lot more trees from that tornado/storm… apparently when they are badly damaged they are weakened for the long term.

street trees have a tough fight to begin with. I hate the idea of losing a tree, but imagine it falling on someone in a bad winter storm, probably worse.

  2. You might want to check in with staff at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to get more information because it’s hard to comment on the specifics of your situation w/o knowing more. But in general the city is being forced to make some tough decisions based on the age, size, species and degree of damage suffered in the storm. There are public safety issues involved and some trees become quite fragile (aka dangerous) once they’ve lost major limbs. Sycamores are a good example of this. On the bright side, the MillionTreesNYC program pretty much guarantees that your street tree will be replaced.
