On Monday 2 people (seemed legit) from the Dept of Agriculture rang my bell in Carroll Gardens asking for access to the backyards. I was about to leave and told them no. Then one of said that they meant to go next door. I was still home for a few minutes and didn’t see them in the backyards. Does anyone know what it could be about?

  1. Thanks (almost) everyone. Asian Longhorn Beetle inspection – makes sense.

  2. I got something in the mail about 2-3 weeks ago asking me to call to schedule an appointment for an inspection.

  3. They came to my house in Park Slope as well a couple of weeks ago, looking for signs of beetle infestation.

  4. Yes, they’ve been all over Williamsburg and Greenpoint (where the infestation started) for years. They should have ID, and they usually leave flyers. Often they are doing tree inventories (they spent less than a minute in our backyard, ascertaining that none of our trees were susceptible and moving on).

Ask for ID, ask them what they are doing. But if they are USDA, they are doing good.

  5. If they are legit, why the sharp teeth and mentions of a ‘candygram’? Odd…

  6. Why does this sound like a scam? They’ve been by my house every few years (Clinton Hill near Bed-stuy).

  7. I have USDA inspectors come every year to check for Asian Longhorn Beetles, sometimes they just show up, sometimes they call ahead, sometimes they leave a postcard with the doorman. They should have a badge and documentation.

  8. Indeed, they were probably trying to snatch your beetles up.

But yeah, this does sound odd. If they didn’t offer proper documentation or reasoning, then don’t trust anybody.

  9. Sounds like a scam. I had a guy show up recently flash a badge. As I called the police department to verify he disappeared.
