Just got a quote from Brownstone Authority for somebluestone work in our front courtyard.

2 sections, 12ft x 18ft and 12ft x 4ft plus enlarging a tree pit.

$7000

-ouch. lol i have to admit i had no idea on the cost, but at that price this job just aint going to get done.

Yes it included demolition of a garbage bin and removal of existing pavers etc but seriously $7k for 2 days work???

NY contractors are out of whack. (or am i missing something and its the cost of the material etc?)

  1. I used Brownstone Authority for my landmark stoop, facade, and parts of my blue stone side walk that had concrete from the 1960s. These guys are the real deal. Craftsmen above all. Clean, polite, show up, and do a beautiful job. They are also not that much more expensive then the other guys with the beat up truck you see around. Highly recommended.

  2. Brownstone Authority just finished the facade of my brownstone in Bed Stuy. They did a great job. Really good work. They were very considerate of the tenants and cleaned up totally when the job was done. And the price was somewhat less than a number of other firms. Realize this isn’t about your job, but, I would certainly recommend them.

  3. Look at yesterday’s Forum or earlier archives. There was someone offering bluestone. Then try other masons. I don’t know why Landmarks should enter into the discussion – pavers are pavers & laying them properly is routine masonry work.

  4. go with the bluestones, you won’t regret it. we had our 16 x 20 ft. patio plus a raised bed done with the 2 inch stones approximately 7 years ago and we could not be more pleased. we paid around $6000 but didn’t mind spending the money because we were getting exactly what we wanted. plus, we didn’t have to deal with a full crew, it was a one-man show that took the artist only four days to complete. today, the focal point of the garden is the stones and it stunning.

  5. op – you thought the project would cost about 4000 – based on what? I always wonder where people get these numbers from before they get bids.

1 1/2 – 2″ bluestone is 9 – 12 dollars per square foot – depending on where you get it. that’s without delivery to nyc, and without the non refundable cost of the pallets.

That leaves about $15 per square foot for demolition and removal, preparation and installation of the new stone, dumpster, permits, etc. $15 per square foot is not expensive for that kind of installation if you’ve ever priced it out.

This is NOT expensive people. Maybe someone does it for less, but really, why do people think these things will not cost money? Do you work for bottom dollar? As the last poster said “you can definitely find someone to do the work for a lot cheaper” but you may not be happy with it.

Find someone whose work you trust, who stands behind their work, and whose work holds up over time. Look at other jobs they have done – a year or two later. Don’t expect something for nothing.

  6. Jeez, don’t vilify Brownstone Authority or the preservation guidelines (especially since it seems you only got one quote). BA is a full scale restoration business with a staff of talented craftsmen. Their work is amazing. And the Landmark people are just trying to uphold some building standards… You can find definitely somebody to do the work for a lot cheaper.

  7. $26 per SF is totally reasonable. I agree with Wyckoff. The stone itself- if it’s 2″ thick is about $7- $7.50 per SF- excluding delivery and handling and ancillary materials. And your contractor is doing all of the demo and grading.
