Our neighbor’s shed and fence appear to have termites. The shed is about 20 feet from our houses, at the end of the garden. The only visible fence damage is right by the shed. The neighbor alerted us to the probable termites, and is going to get them exterminated. Do you guys think we should call an exterminator to do whatever they do to our house just in case? Or, since the termites seem to be only pretty far from the house, wait and see what happens after the neighbor has dealt with the situation? Thank you, as ever!

  1. Thanks, everyone! We will definitely treat, now just seeing if it makes more sense to have the people our neighbors use to come see us, too, at the same time. Thanks again!

  2. Unfortunately, I dont recall who ended up doing the termite work. We might have called in Terminex. For more recent problems with mice and rats caused by neighboring construction, we used Essential Pest Control (718) 768-4960 and were pleased. Cats help too.

  3. i purchased a house a little over a year ago and there was significant termite damage throughout most of the main structural support. it wasn’t a surprise to me b/c we saw most of during the inspection. we knew what we were getting into. i ended replacing the main structural beam just so my wife and i could sleep comfortably at night.

on top of that the house was treated by town & country pest control out in long island. they were great. it’s a bit on the pricey side (~$1500) but you get a years warranty that’s recurring every year you find a termite. make sense? if you go a year and you find evidence they come and treat it again, it then goes for another year. if there’s nothing then all you do is pay a yearly fee of $150 to extend. I’m more than willing to do that since i’ve seen what they can do. believe me.

they don’t just eat wood. they eat concrete, concrete block and wood. i ended up putting pressure treated termite resistant beams in the home.

long story short. i would absolutely have someone in to inspect/treat it especially since basic home insurance doesn’t cover termite damage.

  4. I would not recommend Empire Pest. We used them several years ago for a termite treatment and after completing the work (which included treating beams) they said “we arent sure this is going to work” and would not stand behind what they had just completed.

  5. I would ask their exterminator what he thinks. Termites travel underground looking for wood. Damage happens slowly over a long period of time. Maybe you could kick some $ in as a prophylactic.
