I had to stop an HVAC guy from installing ductwork the other day although he was simply following the shop drawing (which was wrong). He got all pissy and said this would set the job back weeks and require thousands to amend the “approved” plans. I said whatever, (wasn’t my money), then I got to thinking, does ductwork fall under the same area that plumbing and electrical fall in that they are not specifically shown in detail on the “approved” DOB plans? therefore the only change to plans (in this case) is to nudge a penetration through the floor several feet on the shop drawing? Dimensions are not even indicated. Should take all of 2 seconds on the computer. Just wondering.

  1. The DOB in general doesn’t care THAT much because there is not even a single individual in the entire dob environment that really knows mechanical but by law it has to be amended and may be the cause of a stop work order if a really idiotic inspector passes by but it is not that common.
The rule is that you mark up everything accordingly and you go once for as builts if you want it ti be documented. For the ductwork the dob will care basically for the fire penetrations whereas the location on the roof and of the associated equipment location that needs to be indicated on th equipment cards you gotta be careful cause the fire dept. may eventually catch up with you.

  2. Even in new buildings it is a rule of thumb that elaborate MEPs are useless. Other than the major components, it is duct size and the number of bends that play a critical role in the functioning of the system. There is always play in that because it is nearly impossible to predict in a 2D environment what will fit into an old 3D building.

I have not had to have an engineer amend mechanical drawings and resubmit for minor alterations in duct location. And lately since I am seeing increasingly spartan drawings, I have even seen a mechanical outfit simply hand draw onto the approved drawing floorplans the location and the size of the ducts.

You might want to talk to an expediter.

  3. There is no such thing as 2 seconds. They need to make the change, print, sign & seal, process though DOB. I would think you are ok if it is in the general vinicity of the drawing.
