Quality of Life on Eastern Parkway?
We’re looking to purchase a unit on Eastern Pkwy b/w Classon & Franklin, and wondering how anyone living on this stretch feels about it? Is the noise bad? Do you feel comfortable walking around at night? Right now the school (PS 316) is my main but longer term concern.

I’ve lived on EP for 9 years now. I don’t have kids so can’t speak to that aspect of your question.
I vacate every Labor Day because of the parade, but otherwise, love living on EP. As someone else said, it was fun for the first few years. Personally, I don’t like crowds and the bother of moving my car, but I just go out of town that week anyway…
I live beyond Franklin, so farther down than you are looking at. You have to remember that just like any other NYer, you just have to watch yourself and be smart. I see so many people walking at night with their ipods on and their laptops out. Come on people! I wouldn’t do that in Times Square either. I used to work late nights (like 3 am) and would take a cab home, but feel fine otherwise. I also walk my dog really early in the mornings and there are so many people out walking and running and biking…again, just watch yourself and be smart.
I love the quick access to Prospect Park, the Botanic Gardens, the farmer’s market on Saturdays, (I used to belong to the Eastern Athletic Club and that was close by), and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. There are also great places to grab coffee and food on Franklin and Classon. Glasshouse was rated as one of the best coffee places in NYC. Chevella’s is great, Pulp and Bean are fair, cafe Brueklen is good, there are sushi and Indian places and of course, all the West Indian food you could desire, is available.
Noise is not really an issue unless you get some idiot honking his fool head off because he can’t wait 5 seconds for the elderly person in front of him to get out of their car service.
The view is beautiful and it is so nice to walk up out of the subway and see so many trees.
The only thing that really bothers me is so much garbage on the street…
I am glad I bought my apartment on Eastern Parkway. I hope you have a great experience.
Heather how old are your kids? Were you raised in Greenwich CT? (trying to figure out if i knwo you)
I live north of fulton, between Classon and Franklin, and my family is constantly traveling down to Eastern Parkway. Great restaurants, some good shopping, and tons to do with the kids for free or cheap. The Brooklyn flagship library is there, and the Brooklyn Musuem, the zoo, the garden, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum– all have kids programming.
What about the Crown for schools in dist 17? It looks good on paper.
Thanks for the feedback so far…snarky or otherwise 😉
Sorry, a little stupider than usual today.
it = your future neighborhood, sounds = sound.
Make sure you take suggestions about where to live from people who drive through it on their way back from Long Island’s beaches. I’m sure it’s sounds advice.
I almost moved here just to be near the Athletic Club! Check it out. Join the museum, botanical garden, library and shop at the Farmers Market. I think your fears will be assuaged.
i love that area of eastern parkway. altho i live in prospect heights on park/vanderbilt, i find myself wondering that area pretty often. when driving back from long island’s beaches in the summer, i typically prefer to drive on eastern parkway than on atlantic avenue, as it’s much prettier. the labor day parade does get out of control- this past one, i was driving back from long beach, and it was like a video game, that one with the chicken crossing the street? besides the trash everywhere!!! it was like a war scene as far as trash goes. the cops are all over the place tho, and the late night parties are sort of intimidating, unless u r used to street parties… but that is one day of the year and the parade itself is very interesting and fun, and the street food is off the hook.
