Plumber Needed to Move Gas Pipe
Hey All, We’re looking to move our oven from one side of the room to the other–the existing gas pipe needs to be re-routed either under the floor or through the walls. Can anyone recommend an honest and reliable plumber to do the job? As always, many thanks! Molly

I suspect all ThatWasMyIdea means is that he’s heard of situations in old buildings where someone who didn’t know what he was doing created a leak in a very old and brittle gas line — and then none of the apartments on that line could use the gas. You know how sometimes if you’re not gentle with a pipe, a connection farther down will break?
In any case, get a licensed plumber and you won’t have any problems. They’ll know if they need to file. While technically you may be required to file any change to gas pipe, if you are moving it just a bit, probably no one will notice.
first of all i said it can get complicated because it can. it can also be done very smoothly. i’ve seen problems happen but in larger apt buildings where the pressure seal gets broken and basically the whole line needs to be replaced.
also, you need permits for almost anything, but no, you guys are probably right so don’t bother with that. i am sure if something does happen, your insurance would cover it no problem. why would they care about giving you money for taking a shortcut with a gas line.
you’re right, i’m no expert, not an expediter, but i work in the field so i am not just pulling this out of my ass. just trying to tell someone to be cautious.
“you totally need to pull permits”
??
Probably need permits if it’s a new kitchen, or moving the kitchen to a different place in the house. But I’d check with someone who knows what they’re talking about, not someone who thinks running a gas pipe to the other side of the room is really complicated.
> moving a gas line more then a couple of feet can get really complicated
What universe do you live in? Excepting outliers, this is plain wrong. I’ve had gas lines moved twice, one an extension of 20′; it was a piece of cake.
Yes, Nu-Lite of Maspeth. They specialize in gas pipe. I have also heard good things about John Hlad, although not necessarily for gas per se.
you have to be real careful doing that. if your plumber messes up and you lose the pressure in the line, you are in for a world of hurt. moving a gas line more then a couple of feet can get really complicated. you totally need to pull permits for that otherwise you can mess up the gas for the whole building and have to install a new gas line from the basement.
i do some handyman work on the side. I have done many kitchens , including my own. Anytime i need a plumber i use John Hlad. His son owns the business now and those guys are great
