  1. Hi! I just did a search for this because the same thing happened to us. We are a two family house and our water bill is triple the usual amount. The triangle is not spinning. I called to report the problem and the guy on the phone was super unhelpful and said I needed to dispute in writing. Just wanted to gather some ammunition. He seemed surprised by the usage since the whole building has only 4 adults and two young kids — but wouldn’t send some to check the meter. UGH!

Any words of wisdom would be most appreciated.

    Thanks!

  2. I just tried a buch of days and never seem to get a useful time interval. They’re all different, like 12 am to 7 pm or 8 pm to 2 am and 2 am to 2 pm. A ful day very rarely shows and some days show only one interval.. Puzzling…

  3. I got a new automatic meter in July for an apartment building and switched from frontage to metered billing. It’s working out well because the annual bill was $6700 and I can see online that it’s averaging $10/day so I’ll save a bunch.

The hourly breakdowns seem kind of random – if you change the day you might see 3 or 4 time periods and the start-end hours change.

Unless the night owls are showering and doing laundry after 11 the 11 pm to 5 am usage should some indication of whether you have a leak.

  4. Thanks for the link jre. I just created a user id, etc. I’m a bit disappointed by the time breakdown. For many days it’s showing an interval like 8 pm to 5am. I’d liove to see a day broken down into, say, 8 (3) hour blocks. We have a lot of night owls in our building, so I don’t find a posting of 11 pm to 5 am very helpful.

  5. BTW, to helpwith leak detection, the DEP AMR site will display water usage by the time of day – big overnight readings shows a problem!

  6. You most likely have a leak in one of your fixtures. Check the red triangle or spinning dial on your water meter, if it spins when no one is suppose to be using water, you have a leak.

You can also monitor your usage online, go to:
    http://a826-web01.nyc.gov/DEP_AMRReads/
If you see water being consumed during hours when no one is suppose to be using water, you have a leak. Fix it and check online periodically.

Minimum cost for water and sewer is $1.04 per day even if you use no water.

Cost for 100 cubic feet water and sewer is $7.64
Each cubic foot = 7.48 gallons of water
Breaks down to approximately one cent per gallon.

    Good luck,
