Hi

Well, turns out that the former owner of my house cemented the front drain.

The drain is in my front “yard”- where we keep the trash cans.

Do I need a permit to run a new drain?

  1. It sounds like a repair, in which case you can get away without it, but why not hire a licnsced plumber to deal with this? It’s cast iron and is not something a homeowner should try to tackle. In addition, you’ll get a warranty with the work.

  2. Before you begin, check to see if the “drain” is also a “vent” — big pipe just past the clean out on the house side. If so, the previous owner may have closed up the drain because it stinks to high heaven.

  3. I would have not taken out a permit for this thing but because it is the front drain, it is basically visible from the street. Any idea on what type of permit I need for this?

  4. You need a permit for anything plumbing related. That said, I wouldn’t bother but that’s less of a problem in my neighborhood than in others.
