The cord pictured above had been dangling down in my back garden since the tornado that ripped through Brooklyn a couple of weeks ago. It’s not detached, but some of the rubber is torn (not shown here), and it’s hanging down within reach of people and animals, and where vines could pull it down further. I think I just need someone to check and make sure it’s not damaged, and to put it back up where it belongs with the other cords of various kinds that are strung between the buildings across our various back gardens.

The problem is, I don’t know if it’s an electric cord (so that I should call Con Ed to deal with it) or a cable cord (meaning I’d have to call Time Warner Cable instead).

Can anyone help me identify what this is?

  1. Where is your electric meter? More than likely it is in the basement near the front, where the electric comes in underground. I have a similar cable in my backyard to this and it is a cable trunk that hits my neighbor then spreads to serve about 6 buildings with cable service. I’m almost certain it is cable – call Time Warner.

  2. Screw the Yankees. Roy Halladay just threw the second no hitter in post season history!!!!

  3. Cut the wire 5 minutes into the Yankee game… Fastest way to see if the line is active or not.

  4. It looks like cable, but I discovered that Turner cables have the name written on them. Just look closely and see if you see it written in white. That’s how I figure out what ours were when they also fell down in the storm.

  5. It is definitely cable. Call Time Warner if it’s in your way or just grab some zip ties and neaten up yourself.

  6. If you haven’t lost any service, why sweat it? It isn’t electric, and Brooklyn backyards are full of defunct wires. I just cut down a wad of about 20 that circled our backyard. Got sick of looking at them, and also noticed a rat (ECH!!!) crawling along them. I don’t need them, they’re in my yard, allowing vermin to come in. SNIP. Let whoever lost service or provides the service figure it out.

  7. PS, where does the electric come into your building? I think in PS the electric is underground. You forgot the most likely cable, you wireless person you, it’s probably Verizon.
