Anyone have comments? We would be switching from cable to DirecTV for TV, phone and internet. Any thoughts?

  1. For us the cost is approx the same. Our cable/internet bill is about $150/per month and was similar with Direct TV (we have some add-ons). Also, we found Direct TV nickel and diming us with repairs, and was especially difficult when we wanted to get out the contract. Prices/service/promotions may have changed since we had them (3 years ago).

  2. @setancre I see you said nothing about the cost of TWC vs Direct TV? With the economy being what it is we are having to lower our expenses and cable is one of those areas. We are seriously looking at going to Dirct TV because it’s cheaper for what channels we want. Has TWC ever done something for it’s veteran customers.

I’ve had my cel phone service since 1997 and pay pennies for service for my BB. AT&T values my business.

  3. We have Time Warner cable with HD/DVR box and definitely prefer it over DirectTV that we used to have for NFL ticket. It never goes out and the internet is pretty fast. Occasionally the DVR will not work for no apparent reason (1x per year) and a show that you want to watch doesn’t tape.

Other than that, it’s great that the signal is always there. Always hated that the signal in DirectTV would have problems during storms, because that’s when we most often would want to curl up on the couch and watch a movie.

  4. I personally do not have DirecTV (TV) but my friends/siblings have and they all complain about the signal when the weather is bad. As far as in internet and phone, I do not believe they have such a thing for DirecTV.

I have Cablevision and I find the TV quality and experience to be inferior to Verizon FIOS. Navigating on the Cablevision TV menu guide is a joke, there is always a delay while the FIOS is pretty instant. The quality of HD is much better on FIOS too. As far as in internet, dont even get me started on Cablevision. There are peak hours where my speed would drop due to the higher tier (boast/ultra) users have priority on the bandwidth. On the FIOS, it is FAST. Also Verizon has a promotion there is no contract for FIOS. Geez, I know it might sound like I work for Verizon but I don’t..I just hate Cablevision service.

Only sad thing is FIOS is not available in my area yet but 2-3 blocks away from me =(

  5. DirecTV doesn’t offer phone or internet. Maybe that’s a Verizon package deal for areas that are FiOS-less.

  6. “What about Fios? how does FIOS tv compare to cable tv?”

Fios is the bomb. TV is comparable to Time Warner (but has more HD channels) – Fios really kicks ass with the internet though. Twice as fast as my old Time Warner cable internet for less money.

Only bad thing about Fios is they lock you into 2 year deals.

  7. I think their “package” is DSL + satellite, with phone and internet over the DSL and TV over the dish. You can get internet through the dish, but it is not as fast – it’s usually for remote locations, not places that are served by DSL.

I’ve always been happy with DirecTV, though weather-related outages are an issue.

  8. The other thing is you have to buy the equipment or lease it I think if they still offer that option.
