I just noticed that one of my electrical boxes is buzzing. What could this be? Is it dangerous? My other boxes are not making any noise. And this one never has before. Any ideas?

  1. Rick, that is a really good call because our doorbell died at the same time. Didn’t even think the two things were related but I will look into it. Thank you.

  2. Could be an old transformer for the doorbell that’s connected to the box. I have seen that many times. If it is the transformer simply replace it.

  3. Daveinbedstuy, it is the breaker panel where all the switches for upstairs electric are located.

  4. Don’t even guess at this. If it is electric and does not seem right, call a licensed electrician.

I’ve heard boxes buzz and hum before and have always thought of loose connections which eventually arc and arcing is what causes fires.

Of course, what do I know, I am a woodworker.

  5. Define “electrical box” Is this an outlet or a light switch???

  6. No. No dimmers. We did just have water damage in that room. Could it be that water hit a transformer or electrical outlet?

  7. Are you using a dimmer switch with non-dimable light bulb? Sometimes it makes a buzzing sound when you do this.
