we just had a DEP water inspection this week (something screwy is going on with our water bills – way to high).

Anyway long story short they have cited us and sent us a notice asking us to have a water meter conected to the fire sprinkler?

Is this for real?

Does this mean we are going to be sent a second bill (with a minimum amount each month) just for having the fire spriners connected to the water mains in our brownstone that so far in the 80 years the house has been here hasn’t had a fire?

  1. You’re welcome….no, not every Brownstone has two. It all depends on whether or not you have a separate sprinkler main and domestic main. If they are combined, you will have only one. Also, not every Brownstone has sprinkler systems. Depending on C of O, it’s possible that the sprinkler system is no longer needed and can be removed….you can confer with an architect or engineer for more information if needed for removal.

  2. Thanks BP. Does this mean every brownstone has 2 meters or is this something new?

  3. Yes, this is for real. DEP wants every water main…dometic and/or sprinkler to have a meter. I’m assuming that you have two separate mains, one for the sprinkler and one for the domestic? Not sure how they will bill you know, you can find out from DEP about that. They have a rebate program going on, so you should be ableto get some of the money back for the installation as long as the meter application is approved for the rebate and the rebate is approved….you never know with DEP, they’re an anomaly.
