After having gotten lots of advice from this forum here’s what I ended up doing:
For various reasons we had to have all metal. Scott Schnall did the drawings and got all the permits, and I found him easy to work with and responsive. To build the deck I got about 5 bids, and used Lopopolo Iron ((718) 339-0572). They were by far the least expensive and were fantastic. Joe spent time with me, listened to what I wanted, came up with some ideas. The men who did the work were nice, efficient, very competent, and cleaned up. There were a couple of details that bothered me after the job was done, and they have been completely responsive about coming to touch up. Yay! And for those of you who wonder about metal decks, even on hot days the floor hasn’t been hot to the touch.

  1. Nice work on the deck. We’re doing a similar project and I hope ours comes out as well. I’ve contacted Joe at Lopopolo who will quote it, but was wondering if you could share one or more of the other metal deck contractors you had quote the work as a point of comparison. Never know what a few compliments on Brownstoner.com can do to the bidding process. thanks much.

  2. I’m very surprised to see a rhododendron go that dry. yes, they start wilting after a week without water but that’s extreme. My holly in my front yard lost most of its top leaves but I’m assuming they will come back since I’ve experienced this with other hollies elsewhere.

Don’t assume the rhod is dead…the roots aren’t and the stems aren’t. It should come back to some extent.

  3. Rhodies (as they are affectionately known) do best in wettish places like Scotland where I have seen them grow 30 feet high. AT the first signs of drooping leaves, water, water, water. Good luck. Fall is a good time to plant and the plants are often on sale…

  4. I agree it looks great! Is the floor of the deck solid or grill work? I can’t tell from the pic, but am curious about the stairs — they look like they curve. Is it an off-the-shelf circular stairway?

  5. Nice deck! The rhododendron may have been a victim of this ridiculously dry summer. I’ve watered my place as much as I can but alot of the plant look sickly or dead.

  6. thanks everyone! The window on the left is about to become a door. The middle window has always been bricked up..same as every other building on our block….I guess I could have opened it but don’t mind it. The deck cost about 9000$ to be built/painted. Every other bid was at least $18,000. I got good recommendations for Lopopolo and am glad I saved the $9000. My deck is 21x 8 in some places and 21×11 in others. If I could post another pic I would. Now can anyone explain to me why my old completely healthy-seeming rhododendron (lower left of pic) died all of a sudden along with a few other unrelated small trees in my neighbor’s back yards?

  7. Why on earth is one of those beautiful windows bricked up? Don’t you like light?

Why would anyone be hesitant about revealing cost? I always do.

  8. Any plans to open one of those windows up into a door, or am I just not seeing one that’s already in place?
I second DIB’s response, everyone here is always interested in prices, but strangely there seems to be a resistance to telling people what a project cost (I’m in the same camp, I’m always hesitant to tell people what I paid, don’t know why, maybe it’s just human nature)but we’re always curious to know.
