Thought I would put this out to the b-stoner community. I am looking for stock wall cabinets to complete a built-in that I’m working on. I am going to use them on the floor but prefer wall cabinets as they are not as deep as below counter. Ikea has decent prices but doesn’t carry an unfinished product which is what I am looking for. Since they will be painted I am not looking for top of the line cabinets. Something basic with a little detail but on the cheaper side. Any suggestions? Home Depot? Lowes?
thanks everyone
Lowe’s in Brooklyn has these, tough I’ve not found them at any Home Depot. About as cheap as it comes for standard sizes. Unfinished oak – very basic.
I wonder why you are not making your own boxes for the cabinets below; if you can build a built-in, you can do make the boxes. You can always order the doors.
ok, if you want to buy, check with Build it Green. I just installed some cabinets that a customer of mine got there and really liked the quality. They were lacquered of course, so you might want to sand that off and prime/paint. The doors were interesting; mission style on the front, which leaves a lot of room for adding traditional trim, and raised panel on the back (they flipped the raised panel backside to make the mission/flat on the front). Maybe they can be taken apart to expose the raised panel. Worth checking out.

I used IKEA cabinets for that purpose. I didn’t feel like sanding so I primed with BIN (water based version) and then finished with BM.
You can also buy the boxes from Ikea and get some unpainted doors from Scherrs. They are used to dealing with the Ikea dimensions and you just give them the item number and they build it to your specs according to whatever style you want. I got some stained woods cabinet fronts from them and was happy with the result. I also looked into trying to paint the Ikea, and it seemed like a lot of work to sand them first…
Good luck.
If you are painting them why not IKEA? The prices are good and they go together squarely and precisely. Lightly sand whichever door style you choose and paint (spray) away. I assume you’re not painting the boxes. The hinges are made by Blum which are very high quality.
I’ve found that they beat HD and Lowes in quality for the price.
get thee to Green Demolitions (.com) in NJ — or other location. they’ll deliver for you and you’ll have them next week. they keep their website very updated so you can really shop off that — but I love them, love their cause, love their (sometimes) great selection. feel free to offer them 30-50% less than asking.
I’m not sure of the exact location, but there is a home supply closeout store on 3rd. Ave. around 20th. Street that carries the old-style birch kitchen cabinets, no finish, which is what is sounds like you’re looking for. I’m heading in that general direction today, I’ll see if I can find the exact address, but it’s on the East side of 3rd. Ave. in case anyone knows what I’m talking about, maybe they can give a more exact address.
Thanks guys. Any other places I should look over HD or Lowes. I don’t want high end but maybe some just a touch nicer. It would be great to get actual wood instead of chipboard. Know any closeout places?
