We would like to install an operable skylight over the hatch of the basement which we are planning to finish during the next few weeks. Does anyone have recommendations on products to use (ideally local) and who could install ? Thank you !

  1. Did you ever get this done? I’m looking for a vendor to put a glass dome over our entrance to the front and back of the basement. I’d be grateful if you’ve got a referral and photos!

  2. If The Situation meets code, see The Situations below
    1. Your hatch is either set flat onto the ground or, 2. Angled on top of some sort of existing curb. If set flat you’ll want to mount the skylight on some sort of pitched curb at least 8″-10″ above grade. You can find an assortment of double dome polycarbonate skys from jfreeman.com. Velux has a good range of products as well including operable, electric, etc. Most of the skylights come with integral flashing which simply sits on top of your curb.

Probably the more important than the skylight itself is preparing/waterproofing the base of your skylight. Sloping surfaces at base of the curb shoo water away from your skylight which is good. Setting your skylight at an angle will help even more with the snow, etc. A good roofer should be able to do the job.

  3. We are looking into having a skylight as a hatch as well as the option to have a skylight over a hatch opening which you can open slightly…..The latter is probably the way we will go…

  4. you plan is to have the skylight act as the hatch doors? or just a skylight over the hatch opening?
