My (expecting) wife and I are considering moving to Boerum hill. We found a nice apartment on Dean and Nevins, but haven’t quite figured out the immediate vicinity of the neighborhood. We took a walk around (going east bound towards 3rd Avenue) and were less than enthused with what we saw. Can someone please give us the lowdown of the neighborhood — is it safe? are there any areas you should avoid? where do you grocery shop? where is there a good gym? is there any nice park that is in walking distance (and by that I do not mean Prospect Park)?
Wouldn’t worry about crime any more here than any other area.
Walking east a bit and hit a more transitional area of commercial, old industrial, etc and not so pretty.
Atlantic Avenue has quite a bit… supermarket shopping isn’t real close — TraderJoes on Atlantic and Court,
Met Food – Smith and Baltic, Pathmark at Atlantic Center.
Smith St. for restaurants bar….and 5th Avenue in Park Slope is not so far either.
That area is fine. I lived on Warren between the same cross streets and never had any trouble and I walked home late at night from Park Slope and other areas and never worried. Walking toward 4th ave isn’t the nicest looking area but it’s fine. You’ll want to check out Smith St. which is were all the restaurants and bars are. In fact the location is pretty good transportation wise. The F train is on Smith. You can walk up to Bond and Schermerhorn and catch the A/C or walk over to Pacific and catch everything there. You have pretty much every major train near you.
It’s fine. Seems a bit odd that you are worried so much about safety in this particular area, which, in comparison to so many, is relatively affluent. Walk around at different times, only you can figure out if you are comfortable or not.
PS 38 is an elementary school. I can’t imagine that much crime being committed by 3rd graders – the high schools are a different matter entirely. School yards do attract loiterers of all types, but that is way down the block from you….Hopefully someone who lives within the immediate area will chime in.
It is between Nevins/Bond.
How about safety in the evening? I know that certain schools at night can be not such great areas.
Well if you are on Dean between Nevins/3rd, then yes noise could be an issue because of proximity to playground and school yard. But if you are on Dean between Nevins/Bond it would not be an issue.
It is facing Dean… 1/4 of a block from Nevins. Thoughts on that location with noise?
Dean/Nevins is a great area. So many nice places nearby, Building on Bond being my personal fave. Definitely walk West next time. There is also a farmers market down on Carroll/Smith St.
I would be concerned more with noise than actual safety on this corner. If your apartment faces the schoolyard or entrance in any way, prepare for noise…even after hours.
What about the safety of the immediate area? I have read that living by not so great public schools (such as PS 38) can invite trouble safety wise. Fact or fiction on that?
