My car has been keyed overnight while parked on the curb in front of my building. Convenient street parking was one draw for the particular building I moved to in Bed-Stuy…but I can see that that there possible vandalism is the hidden fee. The key job looked like it took a good 10-20 seconds at least, as there are all these childish scribbles on the hood. Two other cars parked on the curb got a quick key line down 1 or 2 curbisde panels, but my key job takes the cake. I’m really self-conscious about having a car in Brooklyn, particularly Bed-Stuy, because not that many people have cars out here. Regardless of the motive, the question is “what’s to come?” I could try to get the scratches buffed out, but I don’t want to go back and forth with the vandals. And though I’m looking for work in the City (in which case the car goes away), the car’s a necessity for now. There are no signs of private parking lots in the neighborhood either.

Does anyone have a similar experience of being keyed in street parking that they had otherwise intended to keep using?

  1. ALL my small dents & scratches are from parking garage valets are careless.

if the key scratches are too deep, you should get some touch up paint or clear coat just to cover it to prevent rusting.

  2. if you take a good look at most of the cars parked on the street around the city they mostly have little dings, scrapes etc. I started noticing this once my car took a few beatings. Between the random stuff on the street and the tools in parking lots who cant be bothered not to bash their cart or car door into yours dont see how you can avoid it.

  3. oh if you got a work cargo van, the punks would even do worse to it.

it has tires slash, painted on etc….

happen to mines and other people i know who owns vans.

  4. don’t bother fixing it, punks key cars all the time, unless you screw someone over.

my car got keyed. hell got even crashed into, I only notice it after i went out and a huge dent after a snow storm. some douche some where crash into my car without telling me. but that’s living in nyc. you’ll just have to get use to it.

  5. Posting for feedback about getting your car keyed is hardly like complaining about dirty shoes. Sure, worse things could happen but getting your property deliberately destroyed by some bored, angry person (child or otherwise) is a great big downer.

  6. Parking in a garage is no guarantee that a car won’t get damaged, the valet parkers are not that careful and the garage will also claim it was like that when you brought it in. Unless you have secure basement parking in your building, vandalism is a possibility. There are buildings with open air parking at the rear that have a constant issue with stuff being thrown at cars. Unfortunately, there is not a lot you can do.
