Help!!! I don’t know what kind of door knob I have and I want to go out and replace it. It is very annoying having people walk into my room without knocking or barging in after waiting one second of knocking. Plus I feel a lot safer having a door that can lock. I would like to know what type of door knob it is and where I can purchase it. It doesn’t seem to have any screws holding it together. IT easily comes apart with a release button thingy. I don’t want to cut the door to put in a new door knob because I am only renting the house. I just want to replace it with a similar style but with a key lock. Please if anyone can help me I would really much appreciate it.

  1. The real question is: Should al90 be allowed near tools? Sorry, but I just couldn’t resist.

  2. Push in release button and remove knob. Two screws in the mounting plate should be exposed. Removed screws and pull apart lock set. Latch assembly can now be pushed/pulled from edge of door. Your lock has a round face plate. Some locksets include this option, otherwise you will need to mortise out the edge to fit the rectangular face plate. The strike plate in the door jam will have to be changed as well.

What dave said… The hole in the door is universal. The set back is one of two measurements. Many locksets include both sizes. When shopping for a new one consider the overall weight as the heavier ones have real metal parts and not plastic. If it is safe to leave room unlocked I would remove lockset and bring it with you to HD, Lowes, locksmith, ect.

  3. That’s a pretty standard setup that you can buy in any hardware store. You’re looking for a “privacy set” with a lock as opposed to a passage set without a lock like you have. Tell them you want it with a key on the outside to lock when leaving, not just a push button lock on the inside. Just make sure what setback you have, the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the knob…2 3/8″ is standard.
