Heat & Hot Water Costs
I am considering renting an apartment where the tenant is required to pay for heat and hot water. The brownstone has been recently renovated, so it has new everything. Can someone please give me an estimate regarding the monthly cost?

Just make sure that you are the only person hooked up to your heat and hot water lines, a friend of my found out that the landlady had them paying to heat the water for the whole brownstone.
Is it attatched on both sides? We paid our own utilities on a second-floor apartment that had windows all along one wall, and the monthly bill in the winter was $200 to $300 a month with the thermostat at 68 until we learned to shut off some of the doors and rooms. I still wonder if there was something wrong with the billing. Also, shut offend boiler entirely in the summer, not just the thermostat, to save money. We had gas with baseboard radiators. Oil, electric, and regular radiators will give different results.
If you considering renting a large apartment, such as an UPPER or LOWER DUPLEX, which is what I think you may be doing, then your electric for AC is gonna be $120-200 in the summer and your gas will be around $90-150 month if you get balanced billing. I know there was an apartment on Dean that was for rent where the owner had hooked up both unit separately for their own utilities. Depends on how much you cook and how many people will be living in the apartment and if you have a pet, then you’ll need to leave AC on all day sometimes.
pete brings up a great point of whether or not you control the heat. furthermore, if you’re paying youre own heat/hot water you must have your own meter.
heat and hot water—-by electric or gas? Do you control the heat/thermostat? do you love a warm toasty apartment and take long long hot showers?
I pay about $250 a month for heat/hot water for total 4 floors of a smaller townhouse. 3 apts total. (that is budget billing averaged for the 12 months)
there are some other obvious factors, such as insulation, energy efficiency etc etc.
how large is the apartment?
we pay our own heat/hot water. our place is about 750 square feet. we enrolled in budget billing and pay 51/month. our actual usage varies (obviously). in the winter we used around 30-35 therms a month. which is about 100 bucks. during the summer months we been using about 15 therms.
