Former NHS Home Repair Students
I know some Brownstoners have taken the course in the past. Were you able to put your skills to good use this summer? Did you team up with a class member and assisted them in doing more repairs? The Fall 2010 class begins in September, what do you think should be improved?

I took the first class, and while the instructor was terrific, I felt the structure of the class was a huge drawback. It was incredibly time consuming, boring, and I didn’t learn as much as I would have liked.
Over the course of many weeks (14?), the class builds a room, starting with demo of the existing structure, then building the framing, and progressing through to plumbing, electrical, drywall, tiling, etc.
Way too much time was spent on repetitive tasks such as building the framing. Much of it was relevant only to new construction. I guess framing would be useful if you wanted to build new rooms inside your house yourself.
I wish we could have covered typical homeowner tasks in greater detail and depth. I’m thinking of things such as repairing old plaster (not covered at all), fixing and installing old doorknobs and new deadbolts, and installing lighting fixtures, faucets, toilets, and changing washers in a dripping faucet.
I’m glad I learned how to use a saw, and I feel confident of my tiling ability.
I still don’t know how to change a washer though. I guess now though I can understand the diagrams that show how.

Hey Montrose:
Acute observation. I’m glad about the level of female participation in the class. Women need to be informed especially since they are taken advantage of in the market place.
Greetings Honeycut:
Before I started working for NHS, HMT had three parts Beginners, Intermediate and Advance. The Intermediate didn’t go well so it was eliminated.
Greetings Seward:

Greetings All,
It’s good hearing from you. I will relay this to Mark. No the guy in the photo is not the instructor. He’s rather shy.
Yes Mark is not a electrician. As a carpentry, however, you gain expereince in other areas i.e electrical, plumbing, roofing, etc. etc.
He knows enough to teach the average homeowner concerns. Plus, expensive electrical work must be done by someone licensed. He doesn’t want to encourage homeowners doing major electrical work for fear of things possibly going wrong and not getting redress insurance wise.
Are these classes offered at NY Technical College on Jay Street? Could someone provide the link?
