Looking to start work on our house soon, but we have an issue in that our street has no parking and therefore we can’t put a big dumpster out front. Looking for ideas on what else we can do.

I’m worried we may have to just get a small dumpster on our front sidestoop area and have it emptied more often.

Any alternatives?

  1. Usually in such a case DOT will still give you small dumpsters with a provision that you must remove it daily but you will be able to get something at least. You can check with the DOT boro office at 16 Court Street 15th floor.

  2. If you can’t put a dumpster in front of your house, then forget it. Agree a regular pick-up from a carting company would be better than moving your stuff across the street and down the block

  3. BrooklynExpediter/Ringo – this is what I’d prefer to do, but a police station and no parking on our curb lead me to believe I won’t get the permit. There is police-only parking on the opposite curb, but I’m guess that’s off limits too. The only option seems to be down the block (on the cross street).

Seems like a carting company will be the best bet, slightly painful, but not too bad, just more frequent pickups. Storing trash as the work nears finishing will probably be the most annoying thing.

    Thanks all!

  4. what brooklyn expeditor said. you can put a dumpster in front of your house, and depending on your job, you should. just make sure you get it dropped on the alternate side of the street parking day so they can park it right in front of your place. dumpsters are terrible but sometimes they’re a necessary evil.

just dont be like my neighbor who has had one in front for 6 months.

  5. Or you can get an official permit from the DOT for 50 bucks for up to 3 months which will alleviate the parking problem as well.

  6. Just pile up all the trash in contractor bags and boxes in the front yard. When you are done, either hire someone to double park and carry it away, or park the bin on another street, and hire day laborers to carry the trash into the bin, then have the bin removed the same day.

We had our trash all over the house and backyard, so we had to carry it through the house, but that’s a bit messy.

  7. Dun-Rite Rubbish Removal has its own dump truck. $50 to $75 per cubic yard. I’ve seen them working on narrow streets. 917-577-1103.

  8. There are demolition companies who have relationship with guys with packer trucks. They organize all the stuff on the sidewalk, call the truck, load it up and clean the sidewalk in a couple of hours start to finish.
