Some web forums seem to indicate that this can be more cost effective than then manufactured “semi-custom.” Anyone have experience with this? I believe the forums I’ve seen are not NYC oriented. Seems like custom would always be more…but maybe the lack of middleman and transport evens it out. Would love to keep money local of course.
There is a company in Chicago that custom manufactures cabinets and ships to New York and all over the Country. They build the best quality cabinets and their prices are pretty good too. You can buy direct from them rather than going thru a dealer and that helps to save money. They use 3/4″ Maple Plywood for the cases and Solid Wood for their doors and drawers. They use only the best cabinet hardware by “Blum”. They deliver direct to the project site on Blanket wrapped trucks. They were featured in Trands Magazine and Signature Kitchens and Bath Magazines. They build Frameless, Frames and Full Inset Cabinets. They also custom build their own doors and drawers. They make the best drawers in the industry 5/8″ Thick Solid Maple Drawer Boxes with 1/2″ Maple Hardwood PLywood Bottoms! They specialize in all sorts of High End finishes like Glazes, Rub Throughs, Distressing. You can visit there website at http://www.thebestcabinets.com
You may have stopped checking this post, but the cost is high – around $700 per foot for just base cabinets
After looking at many woodworking shops in the area, we chose BROOKLYN WOOD + METAL. Right now, we are in the design phase. So far, they have been FANTASTIC! Gerald and Ryu are smart, organized, responsive and, most importantly, true craftsmen and artists. Their prices are very reasonable too — right in the mid-to-mid-high range of what we saw out there.
Their email address is: wrkrwood@yahoo.com.

Frudo – would you be willing to share some basics on what the costs were? e.g. how many linear feet of cabinets or size of kitchen and the cost range?
Any referrals?
I recently looked into getting custom cabinets from Plain and Fancy as well as a quote from a cabinet maker that I know. The cost was about the same, if this gives you any indication, but the advantage of a cabinet maker is that it is truly custom (for example, I can have 30″ deep base cabinets from the cabinet maker, but not from Plain & Fancy).
Figure more than Ikea and much better quality. Less than semi custom depending if it’s a quality brand. You also get the cabinets to work with your space much better with custom, you’re not necessarily locked into any fixed size.
It could be very reasonable. The best way is to stop by and inquire.
