Rant coming… As much as I dislike dealing with big box stores, there is one thing I do like about them. If you spot some tile you like, the price is clearly labeled so you can make an instantaneous decision on affordability. Contrast this with many tile stores where the price of tile is as closely guarded as the formula for Coke. You find something you like, find a salesman who isn’t busy, only to then be told the price is 3x what you’ve budgeted. Can any of you recommend a tile store with a large quantity of in stock tiles where tile prices are also clearly marked so you don’t waste half a day playing the ‘I like it but let’s see if I can afford it’ game?

  1. agree you..i like ceramic tiles..it’s pretty good laying on the floor..

  2. Try Nemo Tile, 48 W. 21st St, NY, NY 10010, 212-505-0009. They have a great range of standard classic tiles (subways, hexagons, pennyrounds, etc) plus lots of more high end stuff. I don’t recall their pricing policy but I do remember they were very straightforward to deal with.

  3. I second Classic Tile. Prices are marked but you can geta discount usually. They are great guys. Good selection.

  4. I recommend going to John Trull of Classic Tile (on 86th Street in Bay Ridge), after spending time in the more expensive and extensively catalogued and showroomed tile shops in the Union Square / Chelsea area for ideas. John can get many of the exact same tiles, and he can (and will) offer much better prices. My wife and I did all of our recent kitchen and bath tile ordering with John. After filling our orders and dealing with three last minute addtions (delivering for free), I can say that he gave excellent service at every step. And the price was right.

  5. Agreed. Place on 9th st has great selection but it took the owner about 2-3 mins every time I asked price on a tile. Tired of it. Went to another store.

Hope he reads this and learns.

  6. Not likely to find a tile store with great selection that has the prices marked as clearly as a big box store does (though in my experience at those stores half the time things are in the wrong place anyway). They also have a terrible selection of tile – boring, ordinary stuff. I suggest going to Lazer Tile, on Dahill Road at the edge of Boro Park. I found a lot of tile there at a fraction of the price I saw it for at Artistic Tile etc…in the city. Prices were not obvious but the sales help was, well, helpful, and they came down in price when I bought in quantity.
