Any recommendations for someone to do a patch job on some damaged floor boards? The floor is white oak (2/14″ planks) and the buckled section is approx 8 planks wide by about 6′ long. We don’t need ending or finishing at this time as we are just doing this as a temporary fix until we refinish the entire floor. Got a quote from Verrazano and one other company and both came in around $450 which is basically their minimum charge for such a small job. Anyone have a reco for a smaller company to do a smaller job like this for a more reasonable cost?

  1. Thanks all. I did check Kevin’s profile and saw that HE is referring himself 🙂

I found a guy on Craig’s List who took care of the floor bump for me this morning. His name is Alberto and he only does floors. Nice guy, showed up on time, called this morning to confirm, etc.

When he saw the area he basically said “If you really just want to flatten it and not sand or refinish right now, I can get my tools from the car and take care of it now for $25.” He explained that he was going to just cut into the raised boards and then flatten them out and re-nail them into the sub floor. And once I gave the OK he did exactly that. Took him about 15 minutes and the floor is now flat except for a few edges where it really needs sanding, but it solved our immediate problem and for that I am grateful.

I gave him $50 because he was so nice and I’m happy to be rid of this headache! He resisted taking the extra money but I insisted. That says a lot about someone to me – it means they have no intention of taking advantage and they are honest and have integrity. He even offered to vacuum up the saw dust, but I was in the mood to vacuum today anyway so I told him no 🙂

He also gave me a written quote for refinishing (and properly patching the area he fixed today) which was a good bit cheaper than the other guys we’ve gotten estimates from, so when we’re ready to move all of our belongings out of the apartment (a studio in a building with no storage means essentially moving out for 3 days just to have the floors re-finished!), we’ll most likely invite him back to do the job.

I’m happy with the results and if anyone else needs a floor guy, I’m happy to provide his phone number. Now I need to get our shades fixed… new post coming up!

  2. That sounds like a good price if it includes matching wood. I got a quote for a smaller area that was $2,000, plus the minimum aged wood to match would have cost another $2,000.
