I’m writing in search of advice on whom to contact about unsafe and unsanitary conditions at the house directly next door to ours. The owner, who did not live in the building, has apparently gone into foreclosure. All tenants have left, and no one on the block has the owner’s contact info. The front of the house is strewn with discarded furniture and trash. The real problem, however, is that the neighbor’s chimney, which sits one story above our roof, looks like it might fall. The pointing is completely gone on the side facing our roof, and it is leaning in our direction. Pieces of cement are falling from the side of their building onto our roof. Does anyone know whom I should contact about these issues? Is there a way to find out if the property has been foreclosed? If so, then what? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ha! Before suspension of mark2market acounting, banks didn’t play landlord. They just moved these puppies through foreclosure. I guess paying the violations and such pale in comparison to the horror of realized losses (bankruptcy!).

  2. calling the bank, generally may do you no good just get the old run around. Call 311. Keep calling follow up, speak to your community board’s district manager and good luck. Many of us have had buildings like this that have taken decades to get any movement-until the building falls down.

  3. Call 311, DOB will come out and write a violation to the owner if needed. If foreclosed, the owner is the bank. I have one bank that is a client and they are all over getting properties fixed up, violations cleared, etc.
