Hi All,
About a week ago, I noticed a small trickle of water bubbling up from a sidewalk crack in front of my building. I called 311, and to make a long story short, they informed me that it’s most likely the building owners responsibility to repair the leak. ( We’re still waiting for a DEP inspector to come around).
Today I noticed that water has now started to bubble up from the base of our basement stairs–yikes!!
Can anyone recommend an honest and reputable company who could deal with this type of problem? I’m afraid the sidewalk will have to be ripped up, trenches dug, $$$, etc.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Molly

  1. I second Harris Water Main and Sewer. Just note that there is a Harris plumbing company on Atlantic also. The guy was nice enough to call me and direct me to Harris Water main. They will send a guy out to do the diagnosis first.

  2. Tell Balkan Adam from bed stuy recommended you. They did my water main just last week. I posted a review on google a few days ago about the process. Just a FYI Balkans price came in lower then all the companies ive seen recommended on the forum.

  3. I used Harris Water Main and Sewer Contractors many years ago when a large dumpster was dropped on the street right in front of the sidewalk in front of my neighbors and my house and cracked both of our mains. We have what is called a long haul, meaning the hydrant is on the opposite side of the street which entails more work and consequently a higher price.
They did a very nice job and were pleasant to work with.

  4. You should address this ASAP; if a DEP inspector gets there first they’ll shut off your water AND fine you (or the owner, if that’s not you). That happened to me about 15 years ago when my neighbor reported water bubbling up in front of his house. [Water mains on my block run diagonally, so even DEP thought they wer shutting my neighbor’s water, but it turned out to be mine]. The fine (or service charge, not sure what they called it) was $500 then; possibly more now.

I used Figliolia and they did a good job. There are only a handful of companies that work on water mains and it IS expensive. About 5 years ago my neighbor (the same one got my water shut down–through an honest mistake, for which I never blamed him) used a cheap company for a new water main). He had to have the job redone several months later. The first guys, who vanished, making their warranty meaningless, used black iron gas pipe, instead of copper, and it failed almost immediately (!!!). I don’t know how much less than the going rate the first crooks charged, but payhing twice is not something you’d want to do.
