We recently bought a Victorian, with the attic converted to 2 BRS–so there are narrow, winding steps going up to the rooms.
I had to chuck my younger daughter’s queen box spring and get a “split” one (an idea gleaned from the helpful advice I received on Brownstoner). Now I am outfitting my other daughter’s room– and I am looking for advice on platform beds–the difference between “platform” and captain”, any brands that people have found great (or not great), etc. I know I will need a “split” set-up (so as to get it up stairs)–but split two ways or four? Any places to buy you want to recommend; or warn me away from?

I thank any/everyone in advance for the help.

  1. My platform bed (no drawers) from Gothic was assembled in the room, two pieces. It’s not the best quality, and the stain color (cherry) did not match our bedroom furniture, but it serves its purpose and you can’t see it once the bed linens are on. Due to allergies, we opted for the platform, box springs just accumulate too much dust over time.

  2. Thanks for the feedback….Gothic for some reason, makes both Captain and Platform beds with drawers underneath. AND charges $90 extra to have it come “in 2 pieces” and $175 more to come in FOUR pieces. So it’s interesting to hear it comes dissembled. BTW the 7th Ave one is gone but there is one in Bay Ridge.

Ikea, never even thought of them….I recall when their platforms didn’t fit American size mattresses but I think that’s changed. Thanks for the suggestion.

  3. I’ve had a platform bed from IKEA for years. Went through 3 moves with it and while a bit creaky, still okay. And it disassembles so again no problem with the stairs except for the lugging up part.

  4. Commenters above are correct wrt the difference between a captain’s bed and a platform bed. I used to have a platform bed from Gothic Cabinet Craft (I used the one on 7th Ave in the Slope…don’t know if it’s there anymore, but there are several others in Brooklyn). It was a good, solid bed and may work well for you, as they construct it in the space (No need to worry about them getting it up those stairs). I would warn you to stay away from those sold by the so-called ‘chic’ futon/platform bed stores in lower Manhattan. Folks I know who purchased from them complained about the quality of construction and said the beds were not at all stable during…er…well….shall we call it ‘adult activities?!?’

  5. I think platform beds are just bedframe without drawers: Captain beds have drawers on one or both sides. Never saw one that came in 4 pieces. Queen sized comes in two pieces (captain) or one piece (platform). As for brands, it depends on your budget and your taste. I don’t want to see the frame, so I go cheap cheap cheap. Gothic cabinets (online or store on 6th Avenue near 8th Street in Manhattan) has always done good by me. I’m still using the one I bought in 1975 and just got a new one!

  6. Doesn’t a captain’s bed traditionally have drawers underneath, while a platform bed is just that, a simple platform? I’m too lazy to look it up, but that’s what I always thought.
