I am nearly 39 weeks pregnant – due August 2 – and am hoping to have several rooms of our bed stuy apartment painted next week. It has high ceilings and tons of trim work. Additionally, we just had our floors refinished so I’m looking for someone conscientious who will not cut corners. Please post any recommendations!
Thank you!

  1. Bad experience with them. Lots of flaking and peeling on walls & ceilings. Attempted redo’s that didn’t work and lied about when he would be there and finish. Uneven ceiling not properly sanded. Ugh!

  2. A couple of years ago I used Greg Evans at Paint Your apartment.

They were efficient and extremely clean and tidy. They certainly took into account needs for special paint and also provided recommendations for color matches if you need that. He provided a free estimate and then a full breakdown of labor and expense so you knew exactly what you were buying. I’m thinking of using them again soon to do our bedroom and bathroom. Here are their details:

  3. I believe the natura is NO VOC, the aurora (?) is the low VOC option. We recently used lots of natura in both eggshell and matt and really liked it. There’s no awful smell… and then the thing I really hate about new paint: the smell of diesel when you light the gas stove? None of that, either. I would read up online, but I don’t think clearing out for days would be necessary if you use a no VOC paint.

  4. Thank you for the advice and recommendation. I would like to use benjamin moore’s natura paint which is low VOC. Do you think I still need to be out of the apartment for a few days? I had thought that being low VOC, I might be okay. I also have a 20 month old at home…

  5. Since you’re pregnant, do try to arrange to not be in the apartment while the painting is going on and for several days after, preferably some place air-conditioned. Also, consider buying low-VOC or no-VOC paint. Those chemicals are hard on your fetus and also on you when your body is under increased stress from the pregnancy.
