It seems that my backyard is suddenly infested with fleas. They’ve made it onto my dog, who has since been treated, but not to my house, and I’d really like to keep it that way. If anyone had any recommendations on how to treat this (as in, am I crazy to think I can treat this myself or should I get an exterminator), I’d love to hear from you. So far, the fleas seem to be limited to one area in the year — I bought some stuff called Virbac yard spray, but after reading the label, it seems a little scary (read: potentially lethal, to fleas and me!). Thanks for your comments.
Definitely DE. Ive treated my dog for fleas with this twice now with great results. No chemicals!! And you dont have to worry about it affecting your yard. I used it to get rid of ants too and some hideous waterbugs.
Great, thanks very much for the info! I will get some of this ASAP, from what I am hearing, several houses on my block are infested as well, so I need to get an action plan going — this is totally gross.

Diatomeceous Earth!
it’s tiny razor sharp fossils that will cut and kill fleas, and it’s non-toxic, cheap, edible (though I can’t imagine wanting to eat it). Since it’s not a poison, it does not pollute and bugs don’t develop a tolerance. Some people say the dust can irritate your lungs, so don’t breath the dust.
Just put a nice line by your door to stop them, and sprinkle throughout the yard to kill them where they are. You will need to reapply after rain since rain kills the razor power, but it’s a cheap fix that is 100% safe for humans, babies, and pets
also: fleas will all die in winter freeze
