Replacing cheap white 12 x 12 tile in basement kitchen. Any recommendations for traditional tile that will wear well and look good (floor goes out to garden so gets dirty). Thanks.

  1. It was built in 1880, so maybe wood is the way to go. Especially since other part of the basement is wood. Thanks, mopar, I should have thought of that.

  2. What era is your building? Generally speaking, kitchens in Victorians had floors, sometimes linoleum. Kitchens in the 20th century generally had linoleum. Occasionally tile was used, but it wasn’t common. More often, tile was found in bathrooms.

In the bathroom, hexagonal tile of varying sizes over the years and with very narrow grout lines was common. In the 1930s and later, basketweave tile was a common motif. Large tiles such as 12×12 squares is definitely a modern look and was common in the 80s and present.
